Building Roanoke: One Community at a time.

Updated: Dec 9, 2025

The Long-Term Mission Behind Our Partnership with House of J

At Barters, our mission has always been bigger than business. We believe communities grow strongest when people are empowered, connected, and given the tools to better their own lives. House of J is the embodiment of that belief and the first major step in our long-term plan to build a new kind of economic and cultural ecosystem in the Roanoke Valley.

This isn’t just collaboration. This is the blueprint for how we aim to strengthen communities for decades to come.

Why House of J Matters

House of J is far more than a boxing and fitness club. It is a community of peers, a place where people of all ages learn discipline, confidence, wellness, and self-belief. Their ongoing work with the Harrison Museum of African American Culture proves their commitment to something deeper — volunteering, cultural engagement, youth mentorship, and uplifting the neighborhoods around them.

These values are what define the Barters model. This is why House of J is Client Member 1 inside the Umbrella Network — not as a test, but as a statement of who we are and what we’re building.

A Partnership Designed for Long-Term Local Impact

Our collaboration with House of J is rooted in one core outcome: economic stability and community growth. Together, we are designing a revenue strategy that:

  • Funds their move into a new, larger location

  • Supports full renovations and new equipment

  • Strengthens early-year operations

  • Offsets membership fees to make fitness more accessible

  • Introduces new revenue streams built for long-term sustainability

  • Builds a stronger, healthier community

We’re not just creating a business plan. We’re creating a future.

Introducing Station9: A Community Wellness Engine

Creating the Station9 brand is another strategic layer of this mission. It’s not just about selling supplements or wellness products, it’s about giving people real tools to transform their health and daily lives.

Protein powders. Vitamins. Mushroom coffee. Daily wellness enhancements.

These aren’t products; they are life-improvement tools that benefit House of J members, Roanoke residents, and the broader community. Every bottle, every scoop, every sale cycles back into helping us:

  • Support local youth

  • Strengthen local businesses

  • Grow community-based wellness

  • Reinforce the economic engine behind House of J and future partners

This is the Barters difference: Every initiative we launch must give back to the community that supports it.

Why We’re Building the Umbrella Network, Starting in Roanoke

The Umbrella Network is our long-term vision: a collective of businesses, creators, leaders, and community builders working together to lift the places they live.

House of J is the first step. Roanoke is the proving ground. The mission is long-term growth, not quick wins.

As Grand Rapids natives, we’ve seen what an industrious, creative, community-driven city can become. We believe Roanoke has the same potential and we’re here to help unlock it.

We want to bring the spirit of Michigan’s resilience, innovation, and grit to the Roanoke Valley. We want to help build something that lasts.

The Founder’s Roots: Why This Mission Exists

Barters was founded on a lifelong dedication to entrepreneurship and education. In high school, our founder created an entrepreneurship study course and partnered with universities for lectures, because he believed business should be taught, shared, and democratized.

Working at the Better Business Bureau only strengthened this conviction. He didn’t want to participate in the business world, he wanted to change it.

Barters exists to redefine how businesses grow, collaborate, give back, and shape the communities they serve. Everything we do today is built on those early lessons.

Inside Barters: Building from the Inside Out

We build differently. Before anything goes public, we shape our identity, direction, and relationships internally.

From creative strategy and brand development to community initiatives and partnerships, we align everything with our core pillars:

  • Collectiveness

  • Transparency

  • Open-mindedness

  • Dedication to people

This philosophy guides every project including the evolution of Blulite, the structure of the Umbrella Network, and future ventures we’ll introduce in Roanoke and beyond.

House of J: Where the Movement Begins

The rebrand and digital launch of House of J represents the heart of our Grassroots Ventures model. It’s where culture, fitness, community, and entrepreneurship meet.

This project shows what Barters stands for: real people, real stories, real impact. We’re building a model that lifts local economies, strengthens neighborhoods, and inspires the next generation.

What Comes Next

This is just the beginning.

Every week brings new ideas, new partners, and new opportunities to grow the Roanoke community — from wellness initiatives to creative collaborations to future Umbrella Network members.

We want Roanoke to be the first region where the model proves itself, where people feel the impact firsthand, and where the Barters philosophy takes root.
